My book is on the way to Canada with my DH, so I can't give a 
page by page canon refutation. However, everything you said 
about Snape applies in spades to ever-so-evil Lupin. Did you 
notice those unexplained absences from the Grimmauld Place, 
and the way Lupin admits that he could have kept James and 
Sirius from tormenting Snape if he'd wanted to?  

Why *didn't* Lupin get to be Head Boy? A FLINT? Or did 
Dumbledore decide way back when that James was more 
trustworthy, despite his past problems? 

What about Lupin's curious lack of affect over Sirius' death? 
What about the strange deterioration in Sirius that takes place 
after his seeming recovery in GoF? Could there have been a 
hotheadedness potion involved?  Oh sure, Lupin isn't much of a 
potion maker, or so he says. But someone else could have 
made it for him.

Hoping ESE Lupin (post 39362 and follow ups) is not the blow it 
wide open theory that JKR didn't want anyone to come up with
