Yes, I was a bit surprised, too.

And I missed some of the old characters quite a bit,
especially Ron (and Hermione, in a way, too).

Ron seems to get a taste of "having is not always as good as
wanting".
He gets quite a few things he's wished for, but finds out
that it doesn't automatically make everything better.
He has to work for it!

But mostly, he seems relegated to the background at lot.

I hope this isn't a tendency that continues in the last two
books.

Maybe it's because Harry was so angry and self absorbed in
OoP, and didn't notice as much about the people around him
as he usually does.

I truly wish HP wasn't limited to such a narrow POV more and
more.

I wanted to see what Hermione and Ron were doing when they
weren't with Harry, and would have been happy to find out
about Hagrid's mission, for example...
