I believe that most think he had to die not because he
was a parental figure, but because he was role-model
material.  Harry would always want to do what Sirius
would do instead of finding what he should do inside
himself.

He needs to listen to others, but he must ultimately
choose instead of following the choices they make (ie
Luke turning Vader instead of killing him).

I think Dumbledore will die as well.  And, even though
it's not true, Harry will feel there is no one left to
guide him.  He will have to find guidance within
himself.


Of course, I could be wrong.
