Again sorry if this has already been said but I can't read as fast as people are posting :)
OK, first I want to explain that I'm one of these people who feels a bit put out by the way that Sirius died, the fact that we don't know what spell hit him because we aren't told the incantation or the colour of sparks, but I've been comparing the description of Cedric's death and the Riddles with that of Sirius and it does seem that it was Avada Kedavra.
It is said in book 4 that "each of the Riddles had a look of terror upon his or her face" (Pg 9 UK GoF Hardback) and it is presumed that Avada Kedavra was used on them due to what we find out later in the book regarding the spell. At the end of the book we get another description of someone we KNOW AK was used on with Cedric. He is described as having "open grey eyes, blank and expressionless as windows of a deserted house" and a "half open mouth, which looked slightly surprised" (Pg 553-554 UK GoF Hardback). With Sirius we are told the following: "The laughter had not quite died from his face, but his eyes widened in shock" (Pg 710 OoP UK Hardback) and on the next page it says "Harry saw the look of mingled fear and surprise on his godfather's once-handsome face as he fell through the ancient doorway and disappeared behind the veil". Both of these descriptions together fit with the looks on Cedric and the Riddles faces, fear/terror from the Riddles and surprise from Cedric so it seems that it might have been AK after all.
But I really don't feel comfortable saying that it's AK, I'm sure JK would have said if it was AK even if she just described a *green* flash of light. I still get a feeling there is something that JK isn't telling us by not saying exactly what spell was used and it seems slightly unfair of her, almost as though she's cheating in some way. Does that make any sense? Like she's deliberately hiding something form us and it's not allowing Sirius's death to fully sink in yet which I don't like, it's like I'm not being allowed to grieve properly.
I really think there is more to that veil though. I am especially interested in the way the veil seemed to hypnotise certain people, Luna, Harry, Neville and Ginny but not Ron and Hermione. Someone speculated that this was connected to the Thestrals but I thought it made it pretty clear that Ginny couldn't see them so I was wondering if it might be the fact that she, herself, very nearly died in book 2, while the other 3 have all seen death, or perhaps Neville and Luna have been close to death too, we know Harry was in book 1 at least.
I was a bit annoyed that we didn't really get to see Hermione and Ron's reaction to Sirius's death, and I think I would have preferred to have seen more of Lupin's reaction too so I agree with those who think that at certain times it was a bit limiting to be stuck with Harry's POV.
Also what about all the other stuff in the department too, like the Time bubble, the Thought Pool and the locked door of the power LV "doesn't understand" (love) and what about all the other doors they never even got round to checking? Does anyone else feel we'll be going back there for some reason in the future? I'm not really sure, there is something going on with those but it is just the fact that, as Amy says, in her post, these ideas of death, space, love, time, destiny etc are as unfathomable to wizards as they are to us, not sure what's going on there.
Lastly, does anyone else think that the boarding school setting is beginning to become a bit restrictive, not much, just a little. There were so many things that I wanted to know about that I couldn't because we were stuck in Hogwarts.
HOLLYDAZE!!!
"No ones going to try and kill you until we've sorted a few things out," said Lupin.
