I just had a thought: what if it's important for the resolution of
the story for Snape and Harry to work together, but that would never
be possible if Sirius is alive? I think that's one of the points
JKR was trying to get across in her (IMO heavyhanded) descriptions
of Sirius's negative influence over Harry: It's kind of like Sense
and Sensibility, with Snape representing Sense and Black
Sensibility. With the influence of the rash, mercurial Black in his
life, Harry's life might have been more in danger, and/or his
progress slower, and/or he would have progressively picked up more
resentment towards Snape, thereby driving the Gryffindor/Slytherin
wedge even deeper, at a time when unity is paramount.

MC

I agree with MC. Sirius's behavior was often rash and of the sort that leads to disastrous results. While it is implied that James mellowed somewhat from the complete bully of Snape's memory, Sirius remained impulsive and heedless of consequences as an adult. Sirius's untimely end shows that such behavior has consequences. Sirius certainly didn't deserve the end he got, but his impatience just as certainly directed him to it. Harry is now exhibiting similar character flaws -he's determined not to see that Sirius could possibly be at fault in any manner, and his anger is blinding him. I'm sure Harry will have to resolve these feelings in the following books if he is to defeat Voldemort. This is what makes JKR's characters interesting. They are not perfect, they have good and bad sides, and if they don't grow and improve they can't move forward.
