Why didn't Harry talk to Lupin about Sirius' death? It seems to me
that if anyone would understand and empathize, it would be Sirius'
BEST FRIEND. Even if Sirius was Harry's godfather, they had only known
each other for 2 years, and even then, Sirius was always on the run. I
don't doubt that they loved each other, as James' son and James' best
friend, and certainly either would have given their life for the
other, but in reality, they can't have known each other very well. On
the other hand, there is Remus, who had been one of Sirius' best
friends since they were 11 years old.
Yet Lupin did not seem to care much. Well, I take that back-- he did
seem upset immediately after he saw Sirius fall through the veil. But
he wasn't nearly as upset as I expected him to be. I mean, this was
the *last* of his best friends, except for the traitor, of course. I'm
not saying that I hate Lupin, or I think he's evil and heartless, but
this bothered me because I couldn't understand *why*. When Harry
arrives at King's Cross and meets the group, Lupin doesn't say or
communicate anything to Harry other than a greeting and "Take care,
Harry. Keep in touch." WHY NO MENTION OF SIRIUS? Even a meaningful
glance would have helped. I can only conclude two things, which is
that either JKR forgot that Lupin and Sirius were friends, or she
omitted Lupin's reaction on purpose to compound on the seeming
pointlessness and preventability of Sirius' death. Perhaps, also, she
is saving the conversation between Lupin and Sirius for book 6, which
would mean that we haven't seen the last of Padfoot :)
