Don't know if this has been mentioned before... I think the veil was
supposed to be the metaphorical "thin veil between life and death",
that the Department of Mysteries has either found or created to be
not-so-metaphorical.
So what hit Sirius could have been any spell that throws people
around, such as Impedimenta. It could have been the same spell that
hit McGonagall about 80 pages earlier when she was trying to save
Hagrid, since those produced red bolts, as did Bellatrix's spell.
As far as I can tell, there weren't many AK's flying around during the
final battle, just a lot of Stupefies, Expelliarmi, and Impedimentas.
