I think that Petunia hanged around with James and Lily in Lily and Jame's seventh year. Maybe Lily brought James home, and bid her family goodbye, because at that time, Voldemort probably had became a constant threat. Petunia listened, and she was probably afraid of dying at the hands of a wizard and she went off to find a way out of this...
  I dunno. I'm rereading the book again to find more clues.
