In the July 1954 issue of Fantasy and Science Fiction there was a
story by Robert Sheckley titled "The Accountant". It is about a boy
from a long family tradition of professional witchcraft who decides
he wants to take up a different career. The story is included in the
1966 anthology "Tomorrow's Children" edited by Isaac Asimov, which is
where I first heard of it since my grandfather sent me a copy fresh
off the press. The moment I read that the Weasley's had a cousin who
became an accountant I thought JKR was referring to Sheckley's story.
However the likelyhood of that is rapidly diminishing. No-one else on
any HP forum ever mentions it. What is the statistical probability
that JKR and I just happened to have read the same story, while
thousands of fans all managed to miss it, even though it has been
around for many years? (If she did in fact use that boy as
inspiration he is not a Muggle, but gave up his magic heritage by
choice.)
