While all the other books are subtly tied together in that you
don`t realize until the end the hints that she has laid out and they
make a puzzle with very few loopholes. Whereas in ootp she sets about
delving into the themes of the books to date, and all the unanswered
questions of the entire series rather than having an engaging story
in the present at the same time.
Now Me:
Your entire post was exactly what I was thinking. I am hoping on my
second read through I will change my mind, but the one thing I always
look forward too is finding out who the person with the secret is.
The hidden, unsuspected person who is more than what they seem. I was
ready to add to my list of Quirrel, Ginny, Scabbers/Wormtail, and
Moody/Crouch. and I got no one. Everyone was what they seemed.
Instead of a puzzle there was a timeline, and my head wasn't about to
burst after the pile of information loaded onto me in the last few
chapters.
I will stop short of saying I didn't enjoy it. I will always enjoy
JKR's humour. It's like nothing else. And I cannot say enough how
much fun all the Weasleys were in this book. Fred and George's
departure was Immortal, and Ginny is right in line to take their
place. Ron and Hermione act more and more like Arthur and MOlly
everyday.
And JKR is so good at writing believable characters. I mean Harry
really is acting like a bratty teenager instead of a saint and I
appreciate that. I love that everyone is flawed. Even Dumbledore. We
finally saw that Dumbledore is NOT perfect and does make mistakes.
And the last line of chapter 27 (Dumbledore's exit) was the best last
line of a chapter ever.
No I think I will place book 5 with book 2, not the best, but still
wonderful and essential to the series.
