Did James have any intention of letting up on Snape? If he did, how would 
Snape have known about this. If something like this:
James: Snape, I don't want to do this anymore, let's call a truce
Snape: *throws curse*
happened, then I would agree with you. But I rather think James never became 
humble enough to do that.
