Absolutly. It looks to me that James was the Draco Malfoy of Hogwarts
back in the day, but without the racism. From what we can gather
James came from wealthy, well established parents (who else wanted to
smack Harry when Sirius spoke about his grandparents for not persuing
the subject. So close!)most likely a spoiled only child. He has his
crew around him constantly to back him up and egg him on (Sirius), he
picks on those who annoy him when he's bored, coast on his
connections and charm, and is flat out sadistic to one boy in
particular. Who does that remind you of?

But James is not Draco. He is truly offended by Snape calling Lily a
Mudblood. Dumbledore tells Harry he knew James in school and later.
Could D-dore and McGonagall hold James in such esteem if he was still
the little prat he'd been at fifteen? I think he may have grown out
of a lot of it thanks in large part to Lily's influence. It is silly
to think some one who acted as independent and strong willed as Liliy
would have been "forced" to marry a man she thought was an immature
bully.

No one is perfect and Harry is learning it the hard way. He has built
James up and now his idol has been destroyed. He is paying for his
father's cruelty in ways James would never have thought about when he
was a carefree fifteen year old.
