I did not see James  telling Lily he's "taking down" Snape because 
Snape has an attitude problem towards muggles, but because "he 
exists". Instead, he started his attack towards Snape because Sirius 
was bored, and he found a particular interesting target. 

If Snape started by badmouthing Lily and the other muggleborns, and 
THEN James joined in to "take down" Snape, I would find your argument 
reasonable, but with what is shown in the book, no.
