I wonder what do you mean by "overplaying" his victimhood. If you 
mean Snape used his victimhood in order to gain the sympathy of other 
people around him, he did not. Neither the shrieking shack incident 
and his worst(?) memory was volunteered by him. The Shrieking Shrek 
incident were told by others, and his worst memory was dug out 
because Harry was too nosy.
