Victims of bullying are often prone to becoming bullies themselves.
Victims kick downwards. Snivellous the slimy little oddball is now
powerful and able to use his power on others, and who better than his
former bully's son.
In some ways I believe Snape's loathing of Harry may not even be
completely conscious, it is just Snape's way of dealing with his life
experiences. He may not be aware of how fully he victimises Harry or
Neville. This doesn't make it right, but just because it happens
doesn't mean it is always premeditated.
I'm not standing up for either party, just my experiences with
bullying as a former primary school tell me that this is often the
case.
