That's what makes it seem logical to me that Lily was older.
Picture this: Lily & Petunia's parents are squibs, or even Muggles,
and older Lily gets her Hogwarts letter. As Petunia stated in PS,
the parents are ecstatic. I know it's hard to imagine, but what if
Petunia is too? Perhaps she adores/hero-worships her older sister?
She imagines a life at a magical school, experiencing and enjoying
everything alongside the perfect Lily, then...
When Petunia *doesn't* get her Hogwarts letter, her bitterness
twists her 180 degrees. If their parents *were* squibs, it would be
doubly poignant, because Petunia might have envisioned standing
alongside Lily as the redeemers of their family line.
The pain and shame of being shut out, and being a disappointment to
their parents, sours her completely to Lily and the WW.
Add into it, maybe, a crush on James???????????????
All utter speculation, thank Merlin for the anonymity of the
Internet!!
