The otter patronus struck me as a bit odd too, so I did a quick
search and lo, and behold, I found this bit on a page about animal
totems:
Birth Totem Otter is an individual who has incarnated into this
particular lifetime to immerse him/herself in the Fountain of
Knowledge.
As such, these souls will be in continual search of information,
ideas and concepts that will provide a refreshing fountain from
whence he/she will thirstily drink.
If you want to read the rest I found it at:

There are other interpretations, but given that having animal totems
isn't anything new, perhaps JKR had this thought in the back of her
mind for both herself and Hermione?
RE: Dumbledore
Like everyone else, I can't keep up with all the posts. I wonder
what you all think about Dumbledore's skills as a Legilimens? On pg.
832 (US version) DD describes himself as a "sufficiently
accomplished Legilimens myself to know when I am being lied to",
which explains all those times Harry thought DD could tell he had
something to say. But given DD's abilities to tell shades of the
truth and be self-effacing in regards to his powers and abilities,
how accomplished a legilimens do you think he really might be?
I so need eyedrops after all this reading/computer time!
