Please.
Sirius was a miserable man. He was in a house he hated, surrounded by
useful people while he couldn't be one. Mocked by the rival he used
to dominate with ease and still racked with guilt over his role in
James and Lily's death.
He couldn't fulfill his role as a godfather. He couldn't fulfill his
duties as a member of the Order. He was being criticized by Molly and
pitied by the kids.
He hated his life. When I realized that, I thought he might have been
the target.
But he died in battle, one last bit of glory, trying to protect the
boy he loved more than anyone else.
If Sirius had lived and the Order had managed to get him out of there
before Fudge arrived, he'd have gone right back to his routine. Most
likely, Fudge's new awakening would not have stretched so far as to
include a pardon for Sirius. Maybe eventually, but not right away.
Dumbledore can say he was wrong to shelter Sirius after the man died,
but his logic was actually right on.
So, Sirius goes back, most likely due for an ass-cheweing by D-Dore
and more pity and mockery from the kids and Snape.
If Sirius hadn't gotten out of there, he'd likely be in Azkaban by
now, or on the run after escaping Azkaban, cut off from even D-Dore.
I submit that, surely Sirius didn't welcome death, but given a choice
to die in battle or live the life he was living, I think he's
probably happier, back there behind the veil.
