I know there have been conversations about Evil!SortingHat, but what
about a Sorting Hat with an ulterior motive?
Especially based on the new song this year, I begin to wonder if the
Sorting Hat isn't taking people and putting them in the *wrong* house
for now, only to shift them later. I haven't finished OOP yet, but I
half expected it to come up in this book (but from the posts I'm
inferring it doesn't).
What I mean is that, in book 6 or 7, the Sorting Hat will "come clean"
- perhaps during the opening song or perhaps partway through the year.
There will be a big to-do when the hat says it has been putting the
people into the wrong house for several years, and now it will put
things right. All the kids will be moved into the "right" house based
on their personality.
You might have Ron and Neville into Hufflepuff, Hermione into
Ravenclaw, Zacharis Smith into Slytherin, etc. Of course, people from
other houses would be coming into Gryffendor (perhaps Luna?), too.
The result is twofold - first, the kids might all throw their hands up
and say "well then what's the difference between houses? It all
doesn't matter now" (which is the *point*, based on this years'
sorting song). But they also might find that they get to know kids
from the "other" houses better, since they are in close proximity.
Plus they will maintain their connection to the friends they've made.
The result is a far better mixing and getting to know each other.
Which is again what I think the SortingHat was trying to encourage.
Anybody else see something like this happening?
