Well, let's think about it, if we can. :)
The reason I brought it up is because I think it could tie into accuracy of the
Pensieve and how it works.
There is no canon either way, but I'm inclined to believe the Worst Memory
took place before the Shrieking Shack prank. I see James as being nowhere
near the kind of kid that would rescue Snape in the Worst Memory scene.
Further, if the Worst Memory prank took place AFTER the Shrieking Shack
prank, it seems that James was being awfully evil toward the guy who could
blow Lupin's secret out of the water. Snape already let loose with racial slurs
under duress, why wouldn't he drop a "freaking werewolf" too.
So, let's for the moment, say that the Worst Memory took place before Snape
discovered Lupin was a werewolf. How does Snape's memory have in it
information about Lupin's true nature?
Snape wasn't looking at Sirius preen himself in class, nor at James muss up
his hair, nor at the guys behaving like dorks at the lake.
Does the Pensieve record in a radius around the person? If it does, that is a
great eavesdropping tool. Just walk reasonably close to a conversation, but
out of earshot so you're not suspected, stay there, and pluck the memory later.
But if it's Snape's memories and only what he saw and heard, I have to
wonder how information about Lupin got put in there. It's his subconscious,
but I also wonder if he is inserting information he picked up at a later date.
I'm not so much questioning the realiability of the Pensieve. I do believe
James and Sirius were arrogant berks, but I think how it works bears
examining.
