I believe JKR has always said that she didn't begin the series with writing
for children in mind.

I, otoh, recall having read that JKR wrote the stories for children (while not "writing down" to them!), figuring that kids would start the series at around age 8 or 9 and read each volume as they matured. The tough stuff in books 4 and 5 are really nothing the average 11-year-old hasn't seen already on TV for most of her/his life.
I have also heard that she actually has the plotlines written in great detail thru the end of the story (book 7), which would pretty much obviate the charge that she's writing to suit her burgeoning market.
