Excellent theory, and I agree - although I also tend to believe that 
Snape is nice to Draco to suck up to Lucius Malfoy. Two birds with 
one stone, maybe.

Your post brings up another interesting point as well, because I 
think Petunia might be doing the same thing at home. Granted that 
all we have to go on is Petunia's no doubt biased testimony, it 
seems that Lily was the favorite in the Evans home. And now that 
Petunia is all grown up, she's made her own son the favorite and 
Lily's the outcast. Poor Harry's catching it on both sides! The sins 
of the fathers, indeed.

Speaking of which, I also have to agree that Sirius and James' 
behavior was inexcusable. It's appalling that they ever found that 
kind of cruelty funny, and even moreso that they *still* do.
