<snip from "joanna barra">what I would really like to know is how on
earth did Ginny see it, when Ron didn't, who has she seen die?

<snip from Vicky's reply> As for seeing the Thestrals, it has been
said here before, but I couldn't find it, it think the condition to
see them is that you should have seen death in a more conceptual
way. Neville
obviously saw his grandfather die and has come to terms with it, so
he can see them already in PS. Ginny has experienced death very
close up in CoS, and has come to terms with it, so to me that
explains why she sees them.

Me:
Ginny can't see the thestrals: On page 764 (US edition): " . . .
Luna was already in place, sitting sidesaddle and adjusting her
robes as though she did this every day. Ron, Hermione, and Ginny,
however, were still standing motionaless on the spot, openmouthed
and staring.
"What?" he said.
"How're we supposed to get on?" said Ron faintly. "When we can't
see the things?"

--Em, who is abosolutely positive that she could see them now, having
witnessed and felt to the depths of her bones the death of Sirius,
most beloved.
