I was under the impression (don't have SS here at (ahem...) work) 
that the dormitories were also split up by year.  So that HP's first 
year, there were five *First Years*, but who knows how many 
2,3,4,5,6, or 7 years.  (Plus an extra Flint or two hanging around 
for too many years...)

Please remind me where JKR's student count can be found on here.  I 
read the synopsis in the VFAQ that compares her count to folks' on 
here.  I am guessing one of her interviews.  But this seems to 
support my thinking that the books center on the important (to the 
story) students and leave others to undescribed days at Hogwarts.

I do not disagree with this.  It was mentioned in another post that 
Hufflepuff's house must've been bigger, if they took the (for lack of 
a better word) "leftovers."

I still wonder how many Magical Folks in the world population as 
compared to number of Muggles.  Do you suppose the census bureau has 
this information? :)
