Cindy, isn't this one of the first times we finally see DD at 
Hogwarts?  I think the instrument is a sort of seer stone (said w/o 
any Trelawney-type pejorative!) and when DD says, "Naturally" he has 
just seen that the snake attacking Mr. Weasley is indeed Voldemort's 
work and that his query, "In essence divided?" is a thought-full 
utterance as he confirms that Harry and Voldemort are sharing mental 
images. He's always suspected it but now he knows.

"In essence" could also refer to the Nagini-Voldemort juxtaposition - 
in fact, it's probably a better explanation than my first one.

But this is what happens when I try to think before breakfast! ;)
