Am I the only one who doesn't think that Harry will end up choosing
to be an Auror?
Considering that Harry's reaction to the prophecy's kill or be killed
clause (murder or be murdered), I don't really see him as the Auror
type. Also, given that, so far, his life has consisted of fighting
the dark forces, I can't imagine him wanting this to be his career.
He'd never really considered any kind of career (potentially barring
professional Quidditch player) before Crouch-as-Moody suggested that
he would make a good Auror. Given that Harry has received so little
praise in his lifetime, he's likely to respond more forcefully to it
than your average person, a fact that probably contributed to his
hero complex. Harry also is already showing signs that he's fed up
of all the fighting; how much more pronounced is this gowing to grow
now that he's going to be feeling a very real obligation to be the
hero?
Within fanon, Harry's careers choices generally seem to be Auror,
Unspeakable, professional Seeker, or DADA/flying teacher. Since
Harry isn't really confortable with his fame, I can't picture him
being either a professional Quidditch player or a teacher, especially
once that fame grows following Voldemort's final defeat. Discounting
a career as an Auror for the reasons given above, we're left with
Unspeakable. Given what we've learned about the Department of
Mysteries in OotP (research), it doesn't seem that that will be a
likely career either.
So, where does that leave us?
Taking into account that Harry and Voldemort seem to be two sides of
the same coin, strangely similar with at the same time complete
opposites, it would seem to me that Harry's path would be to be the
creater/healer to LV's destroyer. Also, given how very little we
know about careers in the wizarding world, and JKR's love of making
seemingly insignifacant details crucial in later books, and that we
know you need an E in NEWTs in DADA, Potions, Transfigurations,
Charms, and Herbology to be a Healer, I think that it's very likely
that Harry will end up choosing to be a Healer.
Any other opinions out there?
I absolutely agree with you. When I read in the book that Harry wanted to be
an Auror, I was actually quite a bit taken aback. Before this book, I always
got the impression that Harry would like to pursue a Quidditch career.
And during the career advice, I also get the impression, he only says Auror
so he has something to say. Because really saying you want to become a
professional Quidditch player, sounds very much like every 10-year-old boy
who wants to play professional football when he is grown-up *g*.
And also, further in the books we don't hear anything about Harry studying
extra hard so he can get the qualifications for Auror, so I think you may be
right.
At the moment he would proabably be happy to survive until his NEWTs and
what happens after that who knows?
But I really like your theory that Harry will become a Healer, I have seen
something like that in several fan fics but still, it is something that
suits him I think. But then after OoP I also think teaching suits him more
than I thought possible before.
