I remember what people are saying about him crying, but I don't 
recall the exact place. But wherever it is, as long as it is in SS, I 
don't think the first-years haven't seen the "horseless" carriages 
yet-- they are brought across the lake in boats. He would then know 
(after crying about the monsters flying over the forest) that no one 
else could see them and may have just decided not to mention them 
pulling the carriages. Once seeing them with the carriages, he also 
may have decided that they were nothing to be scared of.
