You know, I wonder if this isn't maybe a "blind" - "Severus, you apply for 
the DADA position every year, even though we both know you really don't want it 
- it'll make people THINK you do.  We both know Voldemort is going to come 
back someday - this way, you'll have a 'reason' to 'work against me'."  Remote, I 
know, but still...Dumbledore THINKS like a Slytherin sometimes.
