While Voldemort did not know its contents Dumbledore did. And
Dumpledore should have known that there was nothing the prophecy that
he did not here that could help him. It was not a weapon. There was
nothing in it he could use. So why does the OoP have to guard it?
Destroying the prophecy may have made sense. It would have denied
Voldemort what he was seeking.<

Me (Kirstini):
Yes, yes there was something in the prophecy which could have helped
Voldemort: only Harry can vanquish him. Not Dumbledore, not anyone
in the Order. Only Harry. And he and Harry are going to have to
fight it out, and only one of them can survive.
Voldemort armed with this knowledge is no longer afraid of
Dumbledore. He will concentrate ALL of his and the DEs power on
Harry.
Also, the Order couldn't have destroyed the prophecy.
A - the only people who could touch it are Harry and Voldemort.
B- even if they were going to use the Reducto (?) spell on it, and
risk causing the chaos which the DA managed later, they couldn't
*get* to it. None of them work in the Department of Mysteries -
Sturgis was arrested trying to get in. There was no guard on the
Department the night that Harry got there because the DEs had got
rid of him/her to allow Harry free access. But to have done so would
arouse suspicion. The Order weren't the favourite people of the MoM,
and I suspect it was more useful to them to keep Kinsley and Tonks
deep undercover.
Kirstini, again with furrowed brow, but at the amount of time OoP is
making her spend away from her thesis.
