Petunia's response to her husband's mention of Harry in SS goes along
with this: "Harry. Nasty, common name, if you ask me." Petunia
definitely seems to feel a need to make herself feel superior. In
giving Dudley what she feels to be a more elegant, distinguished name
she has finally triumphed over Lily. Her constant spying/easedropping
also perhaps goes along with this. She feels superior that without
magic she knows all of her neighbors' business.
