OOP: Mimbulus Mimbletonia

I don't think anyone has yet brought this up in a post: what was the 
deal with Neville's Mimbleplant? Neville never actually did get 
around to telling Harry about its many fascinating properties on the 
train ride to Hogwarts. So it can shoot Stinksap everywhere - big 
deal. Yet JKR mentions the plant several times throughout the book, 
enough times to let the reader know that she just wasn't using the 
plant to have Harry look like an idiot in front of Cho on the train. 
First the password to the Gryffindor common room happens to be 
Mimbulus Mimbletonia for some unfathomable reason...but then the next 
we hear of the plant is on the train ride away from Hogwarts. (Or did 
I miss an instance in there?) What is the point of this rare yet ugly 
plant? Or is this one of those threads that was faintly touched upon 
in book 5 but will become more important in the final two books?
