Good point - when the plant was first (prominently) mentioned, I
assumed that it would end up playing some immediate role in the
story (a la the mandrakes). I thought that it was touching that the
Griffindors take up Neville's suggestion for a password as I cannot
imagine any other student knowing what the plant's name was. As for
the name of the plant itself, the only thing that I could think of
was that it was derived from the Mimosa plants (ferny things with
leaves that close when touched) or mimicry. As for it's yet to be
mentioned fantastic properties, well I'm sure that they will be
mentioned (and be very handy) in the subsequent books...
