around with the other Slytherins...bullying some kids...then going off
to sulk without any explaination.

always thought of Snape as someone who doesn't care what anyone thinks.
I can see him getting a 'strength in numbers' attitude and going a gang
for the soul purpose of besting James and company, but not feeling any
real attachment to the gang.

Of course he needs love :) And he will get it from ME! I love
Snape! He is the most multi-faceted character in the book,
mysterious and very smart. He must be very smart to be able to fool
the dark lord, and play both sides. I must admit the movie helped a
lot, too, I love every bit of Snape in the movie, especially his cape
flying after him in such an evil way... everything he says is a bit
of a sarcastic gem.
I think Snape is a loner and if he was part of a gang than it was
probably because he was good - and it was probably later than what we
have seen, since he cannot defend himself well in that pensieve
scene. Who knows, maybe that made him learn defense well - being
picked on. We learn that his parents were fighting and he is kind of
shy and ugly and does not wash his hair and underpants enough.
Althought the underpants thing is a bit of a stretch, I would think
the house elves would wash them for all Hogwarts students...
I think there is a lot more to Snape. I am very anxious to find out
the reason why Dumbledore trusts Snape unconditionally. My guess is
that Dumbledore has saved his life once. But it could also be that
Snape is grateful to Dumbledore for giving him the trust no one else
gave him.
