Were they shouting at *him*?  I thought he witnessed his mum
(described as "cowering") getting verbal (and more?) assault from
his dad... (Domineering-Father-Submissive-Mother household??)

I, Marc, write:

When I first read this, the first thought that came to my mind was that
fatefule night that the Potters died. I took the little black haired boy to
be Harry. and maybe it was Snape that was doing the yelling. I'm waiting to
reread the book to be sure, since it was very early when I read the book.
Did anyone else think the same?
