Me:

This is what I have been thinking. Some people have been
saying, "after dealing with Voldemort, how could this school incident
of long ago be Snape's worst memory?" But he could look back on this
moment with a great deal of bitterness. Lily realizes Snape is
a "racist" jerk, and upon reflection may begin understanding why
James teases him. She ends up dating and marrying James, gives birth
to the child prophesized as Voldy's arch-nemesis, and ends up dying
at Voldy's hands.

He may see this moment as the beginning of one big, ever-growing
snowball.

Until he comes to terms with this, he'll continue to be the
miserable, bitter person Harry knows him as.

I guess it's a lesson for the rest of us: you can't go back and
change the past, so don't let it get you down too much. It's kinda
late for Snape to get a time-turner and go back and fix it.
