Part of the reason that scene is Snape's worst memory, IMHO, is that
not only did MWPP harass him, but he ruined any chance he might have
had with Lily. MWPP probably messed with him constantly, and vice
versa (I don't think Snape was innocent either), but it was that
particular time that his pride got the best of him. When Lily tried
to help him, he reacted in wounded pride and called her a Mudblood.
She probably never would have had anything to do with him after that.
If Snape did in fact fancy Lily Evans, he might well remember that
incident as the moment when he lost her.
