Your theory is possible, but unlikely, I think.  The reason is that 
if Snape was there, I don't doubt he would have betrayed himself by 
stepping up to defend Harry, since Snape doubtless would have 
assumed that Harry was a goner.  And I don't have GoF in front of 
me, but wouldn't Snape have then also known that there was a spy at 
Hogwarts, and attempted to communicate that to Dumbledore?
