That is possible, James's fiercest attack only came after Snape
called Lily a 'mudblood' so in defense of a girl he was at least
attracted to at that point he was much quicker and colder in his
attack then when he was just doing it for fun. That raises another
question though, why did James only refer to Lily as 'Evans' and
never once as Lily? Come to think it did she not only ever call
James 'Potter'?
