I thought going beyond the veil is what killed Sirius? Wouldn't Harry die 
if he went behind the veil as well?

I think personally it's going to be an important thing for Harry to accept 
Sirius' death, not to try to seek him out in the afterlife. That seems to 
me to be the point of his discussion at the end of the book with Nearly 
Headless Nick.
