I have to add to that the fact that when Snape saw Harry again in
Potions class, a week or so after the incident, Snape couldn't even
look at Harry, let alone verbally abuse him, as usual. He was
mortified that Harry knew.
Another theory is that he certainly didn't want Harry to see that
particular memory not only because it was very embarrassing for
Snape but also because he wanted to spare Harry the pain of finding
out what his father had been like. After all, we don't really know
whether Snape loathes Harry quite as much as he pretends.
