Hmmm, now I'm getting suspicious.
Regulus is the brightest start in the constellation Leo as in Lion as in Gryffindor.
Regulus is also the "button, globule, or mass of metal, in more or less impure state, which forms in the bottom of the crucible in smelting and reduction of ores." (dictionary.com)
Regulus is also a diminutive form of Rex meaning "little king."
Well, that settles it, Regulus wasn't killed after all, he was sent to do something to Neville but found he couldn't (too impure no doubt) and disappeared to reappear on Dumbledore's side where he (dumblydore) assigned him to look over this other child named Harry. Yep, Regulus is Vernon Dursley and the whole magic hating thing is an act. Or perhaps he's Trevor. Or, option c, I'm nuts.
