Its possible that Snape is not as mean as he acts, but I don't buy 
it.  From the very first time the two meet, Snape takes great 
pleasure in pushing Harry around.  Its pretty clear to me that Snape 
loathes Harry (which is not irrational, having seen just what sort of 
torture the Marauders put him through).  I haven't even been treated 
half that bad, and I would probably not like the spawn of certain 
people in my past that have treated me unkindly.  I think Snape's 
reaction had nothing to do with trying to spare Harry's feelings.
