Me:
I suspect that the protection Harry has is only in force when he is
actually *at* the Dursley's. Voldemort said something to this effect
at the end of GOF. That's why Voldemort had to get Harry away from
both Privet Drive *and* Hogwarts to have a shot at him. Lord
Thingy's ability to touch him (physically) is only part of the
enchantment.
In OOP, Chapter 3, The Advance Guard, they placed a Disillusionment
Charm on Harry, waited for a signal, and flew in all sorts of crazy
directions to throw off any pursuers. It seems to me that the
protection of Privet Drive has a distinct limit.
I think that some direct assault on Privet Drive is pending in book 6
or 7, because V is going to get impatient and try to get past the
enchantment of the protection spell. That's when we'll see the
unmagical person do magic--as a means of protecting their home and
family.
I don't think Dumbledore is stupid, quite the contrary, although I do
think his powers are limited. He is a man, an old man, as he says at
the end of OOP. If he dies in the course of the books, which he
probably will, it may be due to old age, rather than at the hands of
Lord V (like Yoda in 'Star Wars'). That's a let down after his
battle with V at the end of OOP, but that's how I see it at this
point.
