The dynamic probably did change as they grew older. Remember also,
Mad-Eye shows Harry a picture of the members of the original Order of
the Phoenix. Peter is among those people. Obviously he was trusted
enough, not just by James, Lily, Sirius and Lupin, but also by Moody
and Dumbledore, a couple of pretty powerful, skilled wizards. I
think this also indicates that Peter was not a total incompetent as a
wizard, or else they would all be in fear that he's more of a
liability than an asset to the group. He was in deep enough with
what was going on that he was able to pass info on to Voldie for a
while before being able to betray the Potters. So, yeah, things
change once you're out of schoo...
