   I'm inclined to think so too. In addition to the motive he told 
Harry, (concern for what might happen if he tried to teach him 
Occumency) the fact that Snape is a past master of the art, and that 
such one on one contact might help them come to some kind of 
understanding must also have influenced him.

   It seems to me that Harry's attitude is a far bigger problem than 
Snape's. The professor has never let his dislike of Harry interfere 
with his judgement, while Harry's increasingly irrational hatred of 
Snape is definitely affecting his. I'm very much afraid the hostility 
between them is going to cause serious trouble - maybe even get Snape 
killed, and won't that be a lovely thing for Harry to live with!
