OOP: Dumbledore's Silver Instrument

I know that findmeabargain(?) brought this up a long time ago, but I 
still don't think I understand it fully.  When Harry tells Dumbledore 
about the snake attacking Arthur Weasley, and Dumbledore uses his 
silver instruments, with the smoke snakes... I don't understand what 
the instrument was telling him.  I assumed that the "in essence 
divided" was because he was ensuring that Harry and Voldemort were 
still essentially different, that their "mind melds" were not 
indicative of them being the same person.  But what did the initial 
snake mean?  Any insights on this scene would be great.

By the way, thank you for all who corrected my misguided notion that 
the Patils were blond.  My memory is not of the good.
