"Ersatz Harry"
>>> When Harry briefly returns to Grimmauld Place to ask Sirius and
Remus about his father, he finds out that James had not been a
prefect, nor had Sirius, but that Lupin had been chosen *instead*
because James and Sirius were always in trouble. Since there is
only one prefect per house per year per sex, the strong implication
is that all three were in the same house.<<<

>>> It doesn't say instead though. Sirius says: "No one would have
made mea prefect, I spent too much time in detention with James.
Lupin was the good boy, he got the badge." Sirius could have well
been describing who was prefect amongst their group of 4 friends,
not in their house.<<<

I agree with Ersatz Harry. It's the sentence "he got *the* badge".
IMO this implies that there was only one of them who could have got
the badge, and it was Lupin. If they were all in different houses,
they would all have had the potential to get a badge, not the badge.
Of course, Pettigrew isn't mentioned in this discussion, so it is
possible that he was in a different house, but I sincerely doubt it.
In terms of whether the Marauders were in Gryffindor or another
house, it is probable that they were all in Grffindor, unless JKR
was really trying to confuse us when she responded to the question
about which position James played on the Gryffindor Quidditch team.
I am still toying with the idea that Snape was in the same house as
the Marauders, although my post on Snape the 5th Gryffindor is still
unfinished. Of course, if they were all Slytherins, and also had 5
boys in each year as Harry's *seems* to have, this would make
Snape's relationship with them all the more poignant.
