Ok--I had this posted under a different header, but I'm changing it
after rethinking things a bit:

Snape overhears (part of) the prophecy. He is discovered and ejected
from the bar. He takes this new information directly to Voldie.
Now, Snape secretly loves Lily, openly hates James. Doesn't care
about Harry. He doesn't want Lily harmed. So, he tells Voldie
he'll give him information which will save his life but only if he
promises not to harm Lily. Voldie agrees and the life debt is
established.
Not sure of the Peter connection here--who approaches whom first?
Anyway, V. recieves the info. from Peter, goes to Godric's Hollow
and kills James. He tells Lily to stand aside, she
won't. The supremely evil git kills her anyway. Uh oh. He's
gone back on the debt. Because of this, the very next spell
he casts rebounds. The consequences of his actions.

Snape finds out and, in deepest regret, approaches Dumbledore for
forgiveness and help.

Of course, this all completely falls apart if Snape left the
deatheaters before the fall of V. Which, I thought I read somewhere
was the case. Sigh....still, it'd make a nice fanfic :-)

I was just intrigued by the consequences of going back on a
life/wizard or blood debt.
