But DD says (GoF) that Snape came to him.  It's hard for me to believe
that Snape could have become such a trusted member of the order if he
had not broken with LV on his own initiative.

Me:
DD doesn't think so.  He says, OOP, that he believes LV thought that
the child of mixed background would be more of a threat, and so
"chose" Harry.  Admittedly the word "chose" is a bit ambiguous under
the circumstances, but I guess that's Dumbledore for ya'.
