Well, I suppose it all depends on your personality. Look at Wormtail, he always wanted to be safe and protected. And this personality factor ties in with the sorting hat. The sorting hat sorts you into the houses based on your personality. All of the Slytherins must have a factor in their personality that got them in the house. As for Wormtail, ambition wasn't in his mind. All he wanted was to be safe. Wormtail being in Gryffindor is kind of hard to believe... I haven't seen an ounce of bavery from him yet.
